Furman to open campus at 11 a.m. Thursday; classes to resume at 11:30 a.m.

Furman closed Wednesday; all classes canceled

Furman University has closed its campus for Wednesday, Jan. 17. All day and evening classes and other activities are canceled.

The Dining Hall will remain open until 7 p.m. for students. All other dining options on campus are closed. Students should use caution while walking on campus.

The Physical Activities Center is open during its regular hours.

The Furman women’s basketball game scheduled for Wednesday night with East Tennessee State has been postponed and rescheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m. as part of a doubleheader. The men’s team will play ETSU following the women’s game.

Employees should not report to campus on Wednesday unless directed otherwise by supervisors.

The university will continue to monitor the weather throughout the evening and provide an update late tonight.

Students, faculty and staff will be notified by text and email as schedule changes are needed. Updates will also be provided online at news.furman.edu and furman.edu as well as on Furman’s Twitter and Facebook pages.

Furman to delay opening until noon Wednesday; update to follow

Furman University will delay opening campus until noon. The dining hall will be open to students at 7:30 a.m. Students should use an abundance of caution while walking on campus.

Employees should not report before noon unless directed otherwise by supervisors.

We will continue to monitor the weather throughout the morning and provide an update around 10:30 a.m. on whether the university will open in the afternoon.

Furman delays opening campus until 10 a.m. Tuesday

*** Update … Monday, September 11, 2017, 9:30 p.m.

Furman will delay opening the campus until 10 a.m. Tuesday to give crews time to clear as much as debris as possible from Monday’s storm. All classes before 10 a.m. will be cancelled; any non-essential employees should not report to campus before 10 a.m.

The Dining Hall will open at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The Library Cafe will open at 9:30 a.m. and the other food venues at 11 a.m.

The Physical Activities Center will open at 5:30 a.m.

The safety of students, faculty and staff is the university’s first priority, and officials will continue to monitor and consult multiple sources for the latest information. All decisions about whether to close the campus are based on the best information available, the expert advice of emergency management officials and the fact that nearly all Furman students live on campus.

Tuesday does not appear to bring the same level of risk from wind as Monday afternoon. The most severe winds are forecast to pass through the area around midnight, after which conditions are expected to improve significantly throughout the early morning.

While the university plans to be open Tuesday after the delay, officials will monitor the weather throughout the night and make adjustments as necessary. All updates will be posted here.

*** Update…Monday, September 11, 5 p.m.

Because of high winds Monday evening due to Hurricane Irma, all student activities occurring after 6 p.m. have been cancelled and students are advised to remain indoors until the winds have calmed. All normal operations and class schedules will resume Tuesday morning.

The Dining Hall will close at 7:30 p.m., and other food venue locations are likely to be closed.

The Physical Activities Center will close at 6 p.m. The pool is closed.

All Monday evening UES courses are cancelled, but are expected to resume as scheduled tomorrow evening.

After continuing to monitor the track of Hurricane Irma throughout early Sunday evening, university officials have announced the university will operate on a normal schedule Monday and Tuesday with classes to be held as scheduled.

University employees should continue to check local forecasts throughout the morning and use caution while commuting to and from campus.

As a safety precaution, the Furman mall will be closed on Monday and university police will be directing traffic through other areas of campus.

Shuttle services on campus will be increased on Monday and Tuesday to help students get to and from class.

Commencement exercises moved to Timmons Arena

Commencement information.

Due to inclement weather in the forecast, Furman’s commencement exercises scheduled for Paladin Stadium this evening will be held in Timmons Arena. Commencement begins at 7:30 p.m.

Degree candidates should report to the floor level entrance on the north end of the arena (closest to the football stadium scoreboard) no later than 6:30 PM in preparation for the event.  Before departing for the arena, degree candidates should provide their family and friends with rain tickets.  Seating is limited, so we ask for your patience and cooperation as we prepare for the ceremony.  We expect the main doors for all guest to the venue to open at 6 PM.

The commencement exercises will be streamed live in McAlister Auditorium. Additional details related to streaming this event on any connected device and parking for the arena are available at furman.edu/commencement.

Weather Update: University Operating on Normal Schedule Monday, Jan. 9

*** Update…Sunday, Jan. 8, 8:05 p.m. Furman University will operate on its normal schedule Monday, Jan.  9, and the first day of classes will meet as scheduled.

*** Update…Sunday, Jan. 8, 1:30 p.m.  Furman officials expect the university will operate on a normal schedule Monday and classes will take place as planned, but won’t make a final determination until after monitoring road conditions in the area later Sunday.

*** Update…Saturday, Jan. 7, 11:45 a.m.  The Furman campus will open at noon today. Crews have been working to clear snow from the sidewalks and roads, and university officials have confirmed it’s safe to move around campus. The roadways around the university, however, can still be hazardous and visitors are advised to exercise caution when driving to Furman.

Campus housing will open at 2 p.m. Saturday.  Returning students should check in with the RA office in their building.  While students are cleared to move in, university officials are recommending that, if possible, students wait until Sunday to return when conditions are likely to have improved.  More updates to follow.

*** Update…Saturday, Jan. 7, 8:30 a.m.  Because of inclement weather in the area, the Furman University campus is closed until at least noon today.  All sorority activities have been cancelled, and specific questions about those activities should be directed to Natalie Brewster at natalie.brewster@furman.edu. The Physical Activities Center is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.  The Furman women’s basketball game against Western Carolina at 2 p.m. in Timmons Arena will take place as scheduled.  University officials will continue to monitor the situation on campus and provide regular updates throughout the weekend on Furman’s website.

Posted Jan. 6, 12:15 p.m.  Because an impending winter storm could affect Furman University’s normal operating schedule, especially as students prepare to return to campus over the weekend for the start of the spring semester, the university will provide regular updates on its website over the coming days.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Greenville area from 7 p.m. Friday night to 1 p.m. Saturday.  Forecasters are calling for 4 to 7 inches of snow and temperatures in the mid-30s on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The Furman area is expecting 4-7 inches of snow, starting Friday evening and ending Saturday afternoon.

While the university housing is currently scheduled to open at 2 p.m. on Saturday and the first meal at the Dining Hall will be an 11 a.m. brunch on Sunday, those schedules may be altered if closings are required.  At this time, university officials are recommending that students delay returning to campus until Sunday at the earliest.  The university will know more about its operating schedule this weekend and will provide updates accordingly.

“The safety of our students is our primary concern, and we encourage them not to be in a rush to get back to campus,” said George Shields, Furman’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.  “We will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates on the website.  If the university should be forced to close at any time, faculty, staff and students will be notified via texts and emails.”

University opening at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16

Furman University will be operating on a delayed scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 16.  The university will open with the start of 10 a.m. classes.
